REVIEW: ALWAYS…PATSY CLINE at the BDT Stage

by Sue Leiser

The BDT Stage proudly stages the endearing classic, ALWAYS…PATSY CLINE playing now through May 20th in Boulder, CO. Featuring the unforgettable hits of the country music mega-star, this funny and touching tribute celebrates the career and life of the singer whose music “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Sweet Dreams” and “Walking After Midnight” are just a few of the 27 featured songs.

It’s probably not appropriate to begin a theater review marveling about the food; but to me, appropriate is boring, so that’s where I will begin!  I applaud the fabulous dinner we had at BDT Stage last week! Between the pierogis and the prime rib, I was in heaven!!! And then the show – ALWAYS … PATSY CLINE!!!!!

Patsy’s history is quite a story in and of itself. She was married twice, had two children, and survived a terrible car crash. She was also the First Woman in Country Music History to headline her own show in Las Vegas, perform at the Grand Ole Opry, and perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall. Patsy Cline had a myriad of top hits, and she accomplished all of this before she was tragically killed in a plane crash at the age of 30!

Now this beloved musical has been around since 1988, and has been produced in Denver for decades. I am delighted to say that Boulder’s production made me feel like I SAW IT AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!

The true story of Patsy Cline’s close friendship with Louise Seger in the late 50’s, Always…Patsy Cline is not just a musical, it’s a concert. With Norrell Moore as the iconic Patsy, (close your eyes and you will swear it’s her!!!) singing over 25 numbers that will take your memories to another place and time! “Walkin’ After Midnight” absolutely did it for me!  And when she sang “I Fall to Pieces”, I DID!

Alicia Meyers, who portrays Patsy’s friend, Louise, is not just a pretty face! In addition to bringing humor and loving warmth to the show, she co-directed with Artistic Director Michael J. Duran. I also loved the live onstage band, led by musical director Neal Dunfee (whose hands were magical).

I’m not going to tell you anymore, just run to see this terrific show at BDT STAGE!  It runs through May 20th and will be followed by “ The Little Mermaid”, playing through the summer of 2018. Call now for tickets and tell them Susie from Denver Theater Perspectives sent you!

Tickets for ALWAYS…PATSY CLINE include both the performance and dinner served by the stars of the show. Group rate tickets and season subscriptions are available for all performances throughout the year. Call (303) 449-6000 or visit www.bdtstage.com for reservations.
