REVIEW: THE AUDIENCE at Vintage Theatre
by Sue Leiser
Vintage Theatre invites you to a royal engagement of THE AUDIENCE playing now through May 13th, 2018. For sixty years, Queen Elizabeth II has met with each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a private weekly audience.
The Audience stars my dear friend Deborah Persoff as Queen Elizabeth. I’m trying to put personal feelings aside when describing Ms. Persoff, but I am proud to say that she was impressive as she totally immersed herself in this amazing role. From the time of her coronation to the present, the Queen has held weekly audiences with her Prime Ministers, and her “imagined” conversations with seven of them have been created by creative playwright Peter Morgan to go back and forth in history. Persoff’s mostly on stage and her full costume changes are meticulous in transforming her from younger Elizabeth to older Elizabeth and back again. There is a fine supporting cast, the theater audience was totally immersed and when the evening was over I felt as though I had experienced a crash course in British history!
Keep in mind, our smaller local theaters have limited budgets. Vintage Theater and Director Bernie Cardell have gone overboard to bring the royal palace to life. If you are looking for extravagant, stay home! If you are looking for fine theater, make your reservations for this exciting show!
