REVIEW: CORDUROY at the Denver Center

by Devon James

Under the brilliant direction of Allison Watrous, Corduroy is an engaging tale of friendship and
perseverance. Follow along as a young girl, Lisa (Kristina Fountaine) sets her goal on earning
the reward of having Corduroy (Jake Mendes) by her side. While she learns the value of a dollar,
Corduroy simultaneously finds himself in all sorts of mayhem on his own search for his lost
button. Mendes is an adorably lovable, and larger than life Corduroy. Kids thoroughly love to
engage on his journey, and laugh as he navigates throughout the colorful and functional set
created by Lisa M Orzolek. Another fan favorite is the comedic timing of the “Night Watchman”
(Jessica Robblee). Her physical comedy brings much of the laughter throughout the theatre, and
with her history of children’s theatre, Robblee is well versed in what works in the world of
young audiences. Mother (Kristen Adele) offers a very relatable portrayal of a parent working to
educate her child on the value of earning something you desire, and what it looks like to start
your children on the path of understanding budgetary responsibility. Fountaine plays an honest
and endearing Lisa, and Kevin Copenhaver’s costume designs bring a bright and cheery, 1960’s
vibe that will leave you smiling.

The play runs roughly 45 min with no intermission. The prime viewing age is between 3 years –
9 years, however the content is appropriate and can be enjoyed at any age. The theatre is
equipped with boosters under each seat, and even has a space where older children who need less
assistance can snag an up close and personal view. The educational facility has restrooms right
outside the theatre, at a much more convenient distance for parents than other DCPA spaces.
With the show time being so short, you will also be able to purchase a meter at or near the
building if arriving with ample enough time to find parking. Corduroy will keep littles
entertained the entire 45 min, and is a great option for younger audiences, especially when
looking for something during those chillier winter days.
