REVIEW: RESPECT with Cherry Creek Theatre Co
by Sue Leiser
Welcome to my first professional “critique” for Denver Theater Perspective (thank you , Michael Mulhern for your confidence!).
Happily, for my first show I was at the opening night performance of RESPECT, a Musical Journey of Women. EVERYONE involved in this production is FEMALE from the playwright, director, cast and crew. I must say this musical revue bought a smile to my face and the entire audience rocked through the music for the whole evening! Now, being a long standing (that means old!) member of the Denver Theater Community, I know this entire ensemble of women quite well, however, I can still be objective in my observations. Remember, this was opening night; jitters, excitement, anxiety, nerves, apprehension and anything that you can think of that can make opening night a night to remember! However; Director and Choreographer Shannan Steele chose her cast wisely and made absolute magic! Anna High, Sarah Rex, Rachel Turner, Sharon Kay White, and Traci Kern were having too much fun together!!! Their harmonies are fantastic and they created a show where these talented actresses loved on each other on and off stage and the love shines through! You can’t help humming and tapping your feet to the musical memories from the 30’s to the present.
On the down side, Cherry Creek Theater is working very hard to bring us fine productions in a space that has a very poor sound system! It is an ongoing problem with that theater at the Mizel and needs to be rectified once and for all. With these issues aside, RESPECT proved to be a thoroughly delightful evening of music and sisterhood!
Take the musical journey with RESPECT, enchanting audiences now through February 25th. All performances are held at the Mizel Arts and Culture Center (MACC), 350 S. Dahlia St., Denver, CO 80246. The new dates and times of the performances are Thursdays and Sunday, February 18 & 25 at 7:00 p.m.; Saturdays at 7:30 p.m.; Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 303-800-6578 or online at www.cherrycreektheatre.org.
